Biography
Kenia Avendano works from the voice outward. Trained as a classical soprano, she found her way past the choral tradition and into Oddtaxi, fronting the experimental alternative band as its vocalist, then further still into collaborations across Barcelona and Berlin with artists working in sound, dance, and visual art. Along the way, her practice met her training in somatic breathing, and the two never separated. She now works as a Vocal Healing Communicator, trained in Inner Dance and frequency therapy, treating sound less as performance than as a direct line to what the body already knows how to release.
Her path there wasn't a straight one. She started as a fashion stylist in Montreal, where the city's MUTEK scene pulled her toward music's fringes and its otherness, and later spent a year teaching English in Japan, an immersion in Japanese culture that opened her ear to its vocal, electronic, and experimental traditions. Barcelona is where all of it settled, where she's woven into the city's community, singing with an international choir that performs across its cathedrals, and where she leads immersive sound healing sessions and Inner Dance experiences built on one premise: that voice, breath, and frequency can move something in a room that words alone can't reach.
Current
As KENIAA, Avendano is also one half of ATOMATA, her ongoing duo project with Future//Films. The pair have released two singles, "Sleepwalker" and "Sinesthesia," and are currently at work on their debut full-length album.
