Biography

Marija Kovačević treats a violin as a starting point, not an endpoint. Serbian-born, classically trained in Belgrade, and based in New York City, she's spent years working in the space where classical technique meets pure experiment, most notably through Music for Broken Violins, a body of work built from instruments she rescued from a storage closet rather than a shop. Cracked bodies, loose hair, creaking pegs, dragged strings, none of it discarded, all of it reconsidered as sound worth hearing. The project has carried her from Roulette Intermedium and MoMA PS1 to BBC Radio 3, and across stages in a dozen countries. Kovačević's relationship with Future//Films runs deep and long. She's the voice on "Dust2Dust," and played her violin on "Counting.Backwards," one of Future//Films' earliest recordings. On ATOMATA's "Sinesthesia," she brought her broken violins into the duo's world, turning damage into texture and texture into rhythm, the same instinct that defines everything she touches.
